Unconventional T cells – New players in antifungal immunity

چکیده

Life-threatening invasive fungal diseases (IFD) are increasing in incidence, especially immunocompromised patients and successful resolution of IFD requires a variety different immune cells. With the limited repertoire available antifungal drugs there is need for more effective therapeutic strategies. This review interrogates evidence on human response to main pathogens driving IFD, with focus role unconventional lymphocytes e.g. natural killer (NK) cells, gamma/delta (γδ) T mucosal associated invariant (MAIT) (iNKT) cells innate lymphoid (ILC). Recent discoveries new insights into roles these novel lymphocyte groups immunity will be discussed, we explore how an improved understanding action by can inform efforts improve treatment options.

Innate Lymphoid Cells: New Players in IL-17-Mediated Antifungal Immunity

The IL-17 cytokine family has emerged as a central component of the host immune system since its discovery two decades ago. IL17A and IL-17F, the two signature cytokines collectively referred to as IL-17 in the following, have attracted much attention owing to their pathological potential and their ability to promote autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. It has become ...

Tissue-Resident T Cells: Dynamic Players in Skin Immunity

The skin is a large and complex organ that acts as a critical barrier protecting the body from pathogens in the environment. Numerous heterogeneous populations of immune cells are found within skin, including some that remain resident and others that can enter and exit the skin as part of their migration program. Pathogen-specific CD8(+) T cells that persist in the epidermis following infection...

Mucosal-Associated Invariant T-Cells: New Players in Anti-Bacterial Immunity

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells are an innate-like T-cell population involved in anti-bacterial immunity. In human beings, MAIT cells are abundant, comprising ~10% of the CD8(+) T-cell compartment in blood. They are enriched at mucosal sites and are particularly prevalent within the liver. MAIT cells are defined by the expression of a semi-invariant T-cell receptor (Vα7.2-Jα33/12/20...

Natural Killer Cells in Antifungal Immunity

Invasive fungal infections are still an important cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients such as patients suffering from hematological malignancies or patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantion. In addition, other populations such as human immunodeficiency virus-patients are at higher risk for invasive fungal infection. Despite the availability of new anti...

T-helper cells as new players in ANCA-associated vasculitides

In anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody-associated vasculitides (AAV), several observations support a key role of T-helper cells (CD4(+) T cells) in disease pathophysiology. An expanded population of effector memory CD4(+) T cells in AAV patients may contribute to tissue injury and disease progression. In addition, functional impairment of regulatory T cells (T(Regs)) is reported in AAV pat...
